Water, Water, Everywhere! But I Don’t Want to Drink!

If you’ve been living in this world for any amount of time, you know that you are supposed to stay hydrated.  It’s touted as beneficial for physical performance, skin, digestion, energy levels, and even cognitive functioning.

When I first decided to drink water instead of soft drinks, I remember initially thinking that it was not as satisfying.   However, the more water I drank, the more I wanted to drink water and the more I loved it just the way it is!  #TeamWater

Here are some tips to start the water habit!

Get some sort of container that makes it easy to keep track of your intake.  For me, I use these Gatorade bottles.  These bottles are easy to clean, easy to drink from, and easy to carry around.  At 32oz, they are the perfect size for keeping track of my water intake.  I try to drink one full bottle before lunch and one full bottle after lunch, which gets me to 64 ounces.  I fill the bottle up a third time and drink whatever I can before bed.

Use ice.  Many people find cold water easier to drink than room temperature.

Use a straw.  A friend recently mentioned this tip, and it brought me back to my college days.  I would have to take the straw out of my mixed drinks or I would mindlessly down the whole drink in a matter of minutes.  What a great idea to use a straw to drink up your water without even noticing!  Drinking water may be the one thing that is better without mindfulness. Ha!

Use technology.  There are tons of apps available that can help remind you of your water goals throughout the day.  Another option is to simply set reminders on your phone to buzz a certain sound every few hours.  Every time you hear the sound, you’ll be reminded to have a drink.  🙂

Try flavored water.  Is water too plain?  Do you need a little excitement in your water-drinking life?  You can easily make your own flavored water with fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Try adding the following or a combination of the following to a pitcher of water to create your own flavored water:

  • Cucumber
  • Citrus fruits – Lemon, Lime, Orange
  • Melons – Watermelon, Cantaloupe
  • Other fruit – Strawberries, Pineapples, Cherries, Blueberries
  • Herbs – Mint, Basil, Lavender, Ginger

Another idea is to try sparkling mineral water or seltzer cut with a splash of juice for flavor.  The bubbles make it feel a little more special than just regular ol’ water.

Try something weird.  One of my favorite “perk me up” drinks is admittedly weird, but it does begin with a full glass of water.  I’m including it in case you feel like giving it a shot one day.  All you do is add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a tall glass of water.

I absolutely LOVE this little concoction because I always feel energized afterwards.  If you read up on the benefits of apple cider vinegar, you’ll find anecdotal evidence that it helps all sorts of ailments.

I cannot attest to the science behind all the proposed benefits, but I do know it’s been proven to be beneficial in regulating blood sugar levels.  Unfiltered apple cider vinegar (I use this brand) has “the mother” in it, which is basically a bunch of bacteria that are good for our gutsAnother win for fermented foods!
